Should You Buy a TV on Black Friday?

Black Friday is the best time to buy a new television. That’s because retailers — small and large — all over the country host their own Black Friday TV sales, offering substantial savings on models from household names and smaller manufacturers. It’s when televisions are at their cheapest, with the latest models seeing significant price cuts so retailers can clear warehouse space for their successors following CES in January.

The discounts aren’t just on the top-of-the-line, must-have models, either. The deals come in all shapes and sizes, seeing everything from HDTVs to 4K TVs and 8K TVs from leading manufacturers like LG and Samsung in the sale bin, with discounts typically starting at 5% and maxing out at a massive 70%. So, what’s the catch? Availability — the best Black Friday TV deals are in short supply. You need to be in and out in record time.

Of course, it’s the older models that receive the most sizeable discounts. HDTVs are the cheapest, followed by LED 4K TVs, QLED 4K TVs, OLED 4K TVs, and 8K TVs. The name on the box plays a part here too. An HDTV from a smaller brand like Hisense will be cheaper than one from LG or Samsung, for instance. But these more inexpensive options are cheaper for a reason. They could be lacking something as crucial as smart software.

Should You Wait for Black Friday to Buy a TV?

That depends on how badly you need one. If you can wait until November, by all means wait. It’s when TVs are at their cheapest. But if you’re in dire need of one now, then Prime Day 2022 is your best bet. If history is any indication, the discounts won’t be quite as steep as we saw on Black Friday 2021, but a dollar saved is a dollar earned. In other words: If you actively need a television, any discount is better than none.
